The Flag Across the Nation Project is designed and developed to create awe-inspiring, educational, civic and patriotic sites across the country beginning with the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, to the 36 state capitals, down to the 774 local government headquarters nationwide.

Under the Flag Across the Nation, the following projects will be undertaken:

IMPORTANCE OF THE FLAG ACROSS THE NATION
Generally, the Flag Across the Nation will serve the following benefits:

  1. It will be a constant reminder of our national unity and a call to national assignment of preservation of our freedom and liberty from the past to the future.
  2. The pride project and flag across the nation will provide the citizens of our great country with a place of patriotic assemblage as well as national flag education centres  nationwide, where young and old Nigerians can visit to learn and gain deeper insight and knowledge about our national flag and other civic issues required for good citizenship.
  3. It will equally be a place of tribute to thousands of departed Nigerians who toiled and sacrificed their lives for the unity and freedom of our great country.
  4. The site of our National Flag will constantly remind us that we are first and foremost Nigerians, and it raises us above narrow considerations of tribe, language, religion, culture and traditions. It reminds us of our rich cultural heritage and a celebration of our unity in diversity.

PROJECT 1
“THE NIGERIAN PRIDE” (ABUJA) PROJECT
This project is going to be the first major national project that “The Flag Foundation “will be embarking on. It is intended that this project will capture the attention of everybody in Nigeria, among other things.

METHODOLOGY: It will involve the erection of the tallest free standing pole in the world.
The pole height measure is 135 meters (440ft) tall, plus its crown Nigerian eagle. On this pole, a majestic Nigerian national GREEN AND WHITE flag measuring 30 meters by 60 meters (98.5ft by 197ft) will be hung on it. This majestic and awesome flag will be sited at a prominent location within FCT and will be seen from Kogi, Niger and Nasarawa States when it is completed.

The intent of these sites is to elevate us to ever greater height of commitment to flag and to our great nation, Nigeria.

TECHNICAL DATA AND DESIGN CRITERIA
Pole height: 135 meters (440ft) plus the Eagle Crown.
Pole weight: 388,000 pounds (189 tons).
Number of pole sections: 12.
Bottom of pole diameter: 103 inches.
Top of pole diameter: 1.26 inches – ft = 50ksi
Bottom section plate thickness: 394 inches – f = 36ksi
Maximum section length: 39ft (12m).

Mating flanges thickness: maximum: 1.58 inches.
Flange bolts maximum diameter: 1.97 inches (50mm).
Bout Material: A354, Fy > 115ksi.
Foundation: 56ft (17m) Square by 8.50ft (2.59m) deep, 990 cubic yards concrete.

DESIGN CRITERIA
Flag Size: 98.5ft (30 meters) by 197ft (60 meters)
Flag Material: Polyester.
Wind Speed Criteria: (pole and flag) – 90mph (140km/h).
Wind Speed Criteria: (pole only) – 130mph (210km/h)
Seismic Zone: (4 Uniform Building Code).
Near Seismic Source: less 50km (Niger-Benue Rift).

IMPORTANCE OF THE PROJECT

  1. It is designed to be a tourist heaven and a major revenue earner. It is therefore expected that about one hundred and fifty million naira (N150million) will be generated from tourism alone.
  2. It will give an awe-inspiring view of our national flag, thus making it more prominent.
  3. In view of the majestic nature and the awesomeness of such a huge flag flying above the sky, it is expected to arouse the national consciousness of Nigerians, thereby raising their morale and pride of the Nigerian citizenship.
  4. The sight of such a huge national flag will be a constant reminder to viewers that our national flag stands for national unity, peace and love for one another.
  5. With the national flag flying high above the sky, it is expected to elevate our national mood to ever greater height of commitment to national service far beyond all our differences, binding us together in brotherhood which is what the national flag symbolizes.

PROJECT 2
FLAG ACROSS THE NATION (STATE CAPITALS)
Just like the Nigerian pride Abuja Project, similar exercises will be carried out in all the state capitals of the thirty-six (36) states in Nigeria.

METHODOLOGY:  The state capital project will involve;

  1. Installation of 300ft high free-standing flag poles in all the capitals of the 36 states of the federation, with national flag that measures 60ft by 100ft in size.
  2. Installation of 150ft high free-standing flagpole in the local Government Area Headquarters in the 774 Local Governments Nation -wide with national flag that measures 30ft by 60ft in size. The cost will be shared by the host state, local government and flag foundation.

IMPORTANCE

  1. It will serve as tourist centre at the state level and  generating revenue for the state.
  2. 2   It may help to reduce the over-dependence  State governments on the Federation account as revenues may be generated from its tourism potentials.
  3. It may provide avenues for the assemblage of the Patriotic citizen s of the state.
  4. It will offer opportunities for advertising and other media practitioners who may use the Flagpole for advert   purposes

PROJECT 3
FLAG ACROSS LOCAL GOVERNMENT HEADQUARTERS
Just as in the federal and the state capitals, each headquarter of the 774 local governments will also witness a flag pole of about 100ft and a National Flag measuring 30ft by 50ft in diameter been mounted. The site must be in place of prominence.

PROJECT 4
FLAG ACROSS THE NATION’S CLASSROOMS
This project involves the placement or installation of one wall or standing national flag in every school classroom in both secular and non-secular schools from the federal capital city of Abuja to the remotest classrooms located in the remotest village, community, ward, and local government area in every state in Nigeria. It will be provided free - of – charge by the flag foundation, as part of its efforts and contribution to nation building and development.

It will be executed in collaboration with the ministries of education from federal to local government levels. The essence of this project is to inculcate into the mind of young Nigerians at an early age, the ideals of good citizenship, patriotism and democracy. In this regard, the national flag will be used as a point of contact in achieving the entire essence of this particular project.

In addition to the flag that will be placed in every classroom, flag foundation will introduce to the Nigerian pupils small booklet titled “Code of Civic and Patriotic Virtues for the Nigerian Child” written by  the Flag Foundation, which the children are expected to purchase at the cost of N150.00 each. This book is one of the foundation’s materials which is designed and developed to acquaint the child with the essence, importance and conceptual significance of the National flag, particularly how to handle, protect and respect the National flag among others.

The overall idea is to instill the spirit of patriotism and nationalism into the young citizens before they can make complete sentence as children. To make them develop early fondness of our national colours and symbol. Our aim is to positively indoctrinate our young children about the need to be patriotic, nationalistic and to have Nigeria’s best interest always.

            IMPORTANCE OF THE PROJECT

  1. It will inculcate into the minds of young Nigerians at an early age, the ideals of good citizenship, patriotism and democracy.
  2. It will help the children to appreciate the importance of our national flag, as a symbol of our national unity, peace and love, making it easier for them to comprehend what nationalism and patriotism means, to make possible for them to become true patriots when they grow up.
  3. It will help young Nigerians to know and identify with our national colours, familiarize and become properly acquainted with the symbolism of this very important national ethos.
  4. It is intended to install in them, a strong sense of civic virtues and general devotion to the common service in the community in which they live, enabling them to become better and responsible Nigerian citizens when they grow up.
  5. It will heighten their sense of national pride and confidence.
  6. It will help inculcate in them the ideals of democracy, tolerance and to develop passionate love for their country and people.
  7. It will help impress on them what is expected of them as contribution to nation –building and arouse their political consciousness at an early age, and implant the values of Nigerian traditional and cultural experiences which is very rich in moral living. 
  8. To teach respect and honour for our national flag and constitution.
  9. To impact national consciousness in our young ones at a very impressionable age.
